Altered Beast is a classic side-scrolling, platform, beat ’em up game originally developed for the arcade by Sega in 1988. It was later ported to several home video game consoles and home computers. The game’s primary designer was Makoto Uchida, also responsible for the creation of Golden Axe.
In Altered Beast, players control a centurion who has been resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the demonic ruler of the underworld, Neff. The game is set in Ancient Greece and features five levels with varying environments, including a graveyard, the underworld, a cavern, and Neff’s palace.
One of the game’s unique features is the ability for the player character to collect spirit balls from albino wolves on each level, with three orbs transforming them into a human/beast hybrid. These forms include a werewolf, a thunder weredragon, a werebear, a weretiger, and a more powerful form, the gold werewolf. The forms grant the player increased strength and special abilities, such as throwing fireballs and performing powerful attacks.
Altered Beast was the original pack-in game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in North America, Europe, and Brazil, before being replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog. The game has seen several re-releases and adaptations, including a 2005 remake for the PlayStation 2, a 2006 sequel called “Project Altered Beast” for the PlayStation 2, and appearances in various Sega compilations and digital download services.
